Bed bugs are small insects that feed on human blood. They are usually active at night when people are sleeping.

Adult bed bugs have flat, rusty-red-coloured oval bodies, no wings and are about the size of an apple seed. They are big enough to be easily seen but hide in mattresses, box springs, bedding, cracks in furniture, floors or walls. When bed bugs feed they swell and become a brighter red colour. They can live for several months to over a year without feeding. They don’t jump or fly and they crawl and move about the same speed as an ant.

How to tell if you have bed bugs:

Small bugs or tiny white eggs in the crevices and joints of your mattress and furniture – use a bright torch to check for these.
Bites on your skin.
Tiny black spots on your mattress – this could be their dried poo.
Mottled bed bug shells – bedbugs shed their skin as they grow.
Blood spots on your sheets – these can occur if you squash a bug after it has fed.
An unpleasant, musty scent in your bedroom.

Future prevention methods:

Use a protective cover that encases mattresses and box springs to eliminate many hiding spots. The light color of the encasement makes bed bugs easier to see. Be sure to purchase a high-quality encasement that will resist tearing and check the encasement regularly for holes.
Reduce clutter in your home to reduce hiding places for bed bugs.
Vacuum frequently to remove any successful hitchhikers.
Be vigilant when using shared laundry facilities. Transport items to be washed in plastic bags (if you have an active infestation, use a new bag for the journey home). Remove from dryer directly into bag and fold at home. (A dryer on high heat can kill bed bugs.)
Sealing cracks and crevices around baseboards, light sockets, etc., to discourage movement through wall voids.
